Basil likes warm temperatures. Germination, whether in potting mix or garden soil, must occur between 65-70°F. Germination within 1 week is typical.
If growing to transplant in a potting mix, it will take 5-7 weeks to make a transplantable young plant. Growing should occur at 70-75°F and in medium to bright light.
If sowing directly into the garden, sow when the soil is warm, about the time you would typically transplant tomatoes or sow summer squash seed. Visible germination of the basil seed will take 10-14 days. Plants can begin to be harvested in another 4-5 weeks. Side shoots will appear from leaf nodes on any remaining plant stem, and the side shoots become harvestable within 4-5 weeks.
