Gypsophila Gypsy White Improved

2018 AAS Flower Winner

Semi-double blossoms on this new, improved variety of gypsophila will make your garden sparkle! Not only are the flowers semi-double, but are also a bit larger in size and produce more flowers per plant, resulting in a fluffy white mound of beauty. Gypsy White Improved has better branching and a better growth habit than its predecessor, making it perfect for containers, small spaces and garden beds. A much longer bloom season and better heat tolerance than Gypsy Compact White will make this your new garden favorite. Overall it is a beautiful little plant with many possibilities! PLEASE NOTE: This is NOT the invasive perennial Gypsophila paniculata but instead, the non-invasive Gypsophila muralis.

HOW TO GROW

Gypsophilia Gypsy is an easy-to-germinate plant that is best multi-sown, similar to lobelia to create a small clump of seedlings. Sow 8-10 seeds into a well-drained media and lightly cover with medium vermiculite and maintain a temperature of 68F/20C.  After germination, provide high light and lightly fertilizer as needed to maintain green and healthy seedlings.  Seedlings are ready to transplant in 4-5 weeks.  Outdoors Gypsophilia Gypsy does best under cool and bright conditions but will tolerate warmer temperatures if given sufficient moisture and afternoon shade.  Feed with a slow release or liquid fertilizer at the half rate to avoid excess salts. Gypsophilia is sensitive to drought stress so do not allow plants to wilt severely as they will not recover well. Commercial Grower Culture Guide.

JUDGE'S OBSERVATIONS

  • “Very nice entry, unique color, excellent habit and better resistance to rust and mildew than comparisons”
  • “This plant was noticeably “whiter” than the comparison.”
  • “The Entry’s habit was fuller, denser and more vigorous than the Comparison, on average plants were 1 3/4″ larger.”
  • “This is an OUTSTANDING plant! The blooms were triple compared to the comparison! It was almost a white carpet.”
  • “The fanciness and flower coverage of the entry was excellent.”
  • “The semi-doubleness of the flowers combined with more and slightly larger flowers really improved the appearance of this variety over the comparison.”
