Marigold Big Duck Gold F1

2019 AAS Flower Winner

QUACK! There’s a new marigold in the pond! Big Duck Gold sports very large golden-yellow flowers that continue blooming throughout the season, much longer than the comparisons. These marigolds begin the season putting energy into establishing a solid, healthy plant with clean, deep-green foliage. Then, when it starts blooming, watch out! Full, “plump” blooms top the 15” plants (which are slightly taller than the more compact comparison varieties) and continue blooming through the end of the season. You’ll want to use these marigolds everywhere: in beds and containers; in landscapes as mini hedges, back of the border plants, or even as a filler in new perennial beds.

JUDGE'S OBSERVATIONS

  • “In the garden, this entry outshined all three of its competitors and I feel it should be an award winner.”
  • “At the end of the season, the entry is the only one standing! The comparisons have all flowered out, or died!”
  • “Entry plants were still producing an excellent display of flowers long after the comparisons were showing reduced flower production and more spent blooms.”
  • “Entry is taller than the more compact comparisons, has a large flower head and outlived all the comparisons.”
  • “At the end of the season, most of the comparisons died but the entry is still doing great overall, is much taller and fuller, with more/bigger flowers.”

I grew these last year as a garden border with yellow and orange alternating colors, starting them from seeds. I had grown them previous to that in full sun and they were so big they needed staking, but where I put them last year had partial shade so they grew to about 75 percent size, still pretty big and lasted way into the patchy frost in the fall. No mistaking that marigold smell ,from these ducks!
