First Place Winner: Krohn Conservatory, Cincinnati, Ohio

Krohn Conservatory started the year with a jump on planning for this Design Challenge by finding and repurposing picket fencing, window frames, window boxes, a fountain, and containers to mimic a home’s entry garden. Alas, when COVID hit, most staff time was directed to cleaning and disinfecting but they persevered and still were able to plant a fun and colorful garden. Their reward comes from this anecdote: “Since we were one of the public places that people felt safe, our parks were packed every day with people enjoying themselves. My favorite story was from a lady who walked in our park daily after she was let go from her job due to COVID. She said that the gardens gave her a reason to get up every morning and see what changes had happened from the previous day. She said her anger, frustration, and fear dissipated by immersing herself in the beauty of nature.”
