Lee College’s students are not your “typical” college student, located within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, these students are offenders who see horticulture as a future career once they graduate from the system. Since their greenhouse is the focal point of their program and a place that visitors see, that was chosen as the location for the “Make an Entrance” garden. After doing the initial planting in March, no one was allowed back into the area until June. What did they see upon their arrival? Not a desert land of dead plants but plants that were surviving the summer heat after not being watered nor fertilized. We’d certainly say “The Proof is in the Plant”! A quote from one of the students says a lot about the value and benefits of horticulture: “I never would have thought the impact this project would have on me. I now believe I have found what I want to do for the rest of my life. I look forward to every day I am out here, in my garden, working in the greenhouse or doing various horticulture projects.”
