This cylindrical white eggplant earned the prestigious AAS award for several reasons. The Icicle plant has fewer spines than most eggplants, making for a less painful harvest! With larger fruits than other white eggplants, it produces a nice yield while also providing fewer seeds. The large, durable, and vigorous plants hold up to insect damage and the environment. The pure white skin does not tend to yellow like many other white varieties of eggplant. The improved taste and texture has universal appeal (whether fresh or cooked), one judge served it to his children: “Even my 11-year-old asked for seconds when I breaded and fried them at home.” That’s a culinary testimonial!

The seeds should be sowed in substrate or sand with proper irrigation. After 20 days, the grower should transplant the young plant to the field or an 18-24 inches pot. The eggplant “Icicle” is very vigorous in the field. It requires full sun. The first harvest will start on the 60th day after transplanting. The yield of the “Icicle” is quite heavy, so we suggest the gardener arrange a proper staking system or supporting rope to keep the plant upright.
- “The plant was sturdy and remained upright despite a heavy fruit load.”
- “I would actually consider growing this in my home garden. It is easy, looks kind of interesting, and has great culinary qualities. Good stuff.”
- “Entry – taller plants were able to hold long fruit out of the soil. Nice shape and diameter. Clean taste.”
- “I hope that this variety becomes available in the home garden market, as it would be my first choice in eggplant varieties.”
- “Best features of entry are that it has reduced spines, larger size, better fruit shape, and uniformity.”

I had great success with Eggplant Icicle F1 in a container and in the ground. The plants produced fruit all season; the fruit was the tender and mild tasting – not bitter. I started them from seeds under grow lights last spring. I’ve tried planting purple eggplants and couldn’t get fruits, but had many fruits with Icicle. I will definitely grow them again next year. Highly recommend!

Robust 4’ tall well branched plants produced an abundance of white Asian type eggplants right up until frost despite flea beetle damage which did not impact the overall vigor and health of the plants. Surprisingly plants only required staking until late in the season after a strong thunderstorm.

Icicle eggplant has outperformed other types of eggplant we have tried here north of Atlanta. The seedlings generated well and the plants have been steady producers all season. I’ve sliced and grilled on skewers, sauteed them in olive oil and cut them into strips, dipped them in a light egg wash and panko break crumbs then roasted them in the oven for tasty appetizers.
