How to Grow:

It can be grown as a hanging fruit on a trellis (trellising/vertical cultivation) or as a creeping vine on the ground (ground cultivation). The ‘Butter Lamp’ squash thrives in climates ranging from cool to high temperatures, with an optimum growth temperature between 60 ~ 95°F. The ideal soil is deep, fertile, and well-drained loam or sandy loam. However, squash roots are highly adaptable; even in sandy or gravelly areas lacking water and nutrient retention, high yields can still be achieved with careful attention to irrigation and fertilization. The optimal soil pH is 5.5-6.8

Plant Spacing (Row and Plant Distance)
• Ground Cultivation: Plant in double rows with a row spacing of 7 to 8 meters (approx. 23 to 26 feet) and an in-row plant spacing of 0.8 to 1 meter (approx. 2.6 to 3.3 feet).
• Trellising/Hanging Fruit Cultivation: Plant in double rows with a row spacing of 4 meters (approx. 13 feet) and an in-row plant spacing of 0.4 to 0.7 meters (approx. 1.3 to 2.3 feet).

Squash is a strong feeder. Excessive nitrogen application in the early stages can lead to overly vigorous vegetative growth (bolting/leggy growth) and poor fruit set

Squash fruits already have flavor and are edible before they are fully mature, but the quality is not fully developed, the texture is softer, and the sweetness is lower. The optimal period from fruit set to harvest is 40 to 50 days. At full maturity, the fruit stem becomes brown and woody, and the peel displays the variety’s inherent color. At this stage, the starchy content inside the fruit is fully developed, and the quality is at its peak, with the best texture and sugar content. Moreover, the fruit is also durable for long-term storage and transportation. After harvest, the squash needs to be cured for 7 to 10 days (a process that promotes moisture loss, often referred to as “drying out” or “sweating”) to enhance its texture and sweetness.
